Batchelor’s Chicken Noodle – ASDA 75p for four sachets

There haven’t been many scones in my life over the last twelve months, but as I was sitting at work drinking Cup a Soup last week, I thought “I know what I can do”. So here I am, doing it.

I’ve been meaning to ty the Chicken Noodle for a few weeks but ASDA have been unable to supply it. I don’t know why, it’s not that good that people will be stocking up with it.

My first thought was that it looked like washing up water after a hard day cooking  – a little grey with a sheen of grease. My second thought was that it tasted a bit like washing up water too. As I got to the bottom I found that despite energetic stirring at the beginning,  a lot of it had settled back in the bottom of the mug, particularly the noodles. I wondered where they had got to – they had seemed a bit sparse. Be warned at this point, do not scoop out the noodles and eat them, when they are semi-dissolved and eaten in bulk they resemble wallpaper paste.

My second cup, taken later in the day, was a better experience. I stirred it several times whilst drinking it and the colour, flavour and noodle distribution were all greatly improved. The main problem, once that was solved, was that two of these soups provided me with 50% of my daily salt ration. That’s not good.

For 75p it’s not expensive and as long as you stir several times whilst drinking, the taste and noodle issue is solved.

Fish and Chips at Cromer

I’ll jump ahead a bit, missing out the rest of the Hunstanton visit and Cromer Pier and getting straight to the chips.

When a chip shop calls itself Number One, even if it is at No 1 New Street, it’s making a big statement. When this is backed up by fish and chips at £12.50 it’s doing the same, as you can generally get them for £9.50. So was it really 25% better than the average fish and chip shop?

Difficult to say.

I had hake and Julia had rock (which used to be called rock salmon in the days before trades description legislation).

I’m not sure if either of them were up to the mark. The rock was a bit soft compared to the shark I’ve had before, which has always been quite fibrous, and the hake was a bit too fishy. I believe that hake is generally more fish flavoured than other fish, so this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though again, it seemed a bit soft and didn’t flake well.

Portion size was good, batter was OK – not quite crisp enough for my taste. They were served seasoned with sea salt. When I’d read this on the menu I imagined a light sprinkle of salt, not the amount that ended up piled on the fish. Look at the photo for an idea of what happened. Too much salt!

The chips, on the other hand, were excellent. Big, crispy and plentiful.

Tartare sauce was tangy and had a great flavour. Ten out of ten for that.

The peas, on the other hand, were bland. We had the non-minted ones – I suppose the minted ones would have been a better choice. I don’t know how you can make bland peas, particulalrly when there was plenty of salt on the fish.

There’s no excuse for poor peas. They should have remembered the 6 P Rule.

We’re currently discussing this meal – Julia says she would go back again. I say I probably wouldn’t. It wasn’t bad, but I don’t think it was any better than some of the cheaper offerings from less glitzy shops.

 

 

No Snow!

After a day of lying in, with the covers pulled up to my chin and the polar weather well and truly ignored, I rose to find things were considerably less snowy than when I’d gone to bed.

In fact, after all the hype, and all my moaning most of it had gone.

I then went shopping, took a few photos, moaned internally about idiots in TESCO and spent too much on groceries. I could go into greater detail about the idiots in TESCO as there was a particularly fine crop today, including one wearing a Bluetooth headset.

It bears repeating, and I have repeated it, I confess, that there is little difference between someone talking to a Bluetooth headset and someone talking to themselves in the manner of a burbling idiot.

There were also several sets of giggling girls and even one fully grown woman who seemed to be letting her sense of humour gain the upper hand. I checked my clothing for malfunctions and comic notes but couldn’t find anything so can only assume there is something hysterically funny about shopping. I’ve never noticed it myself, but it takes all sorts.

After that it was off to pick Julia up and watch a BMW getting stuck in a very small patch of snow. I’d gone through the patch without really noticing it, turned round and parked ready to pick Julia up. The BMW followed a short while after and spent some time spinning his wheels before reversing and trying again.

 

It is so tempting to be sarcastic here – but I’m better than that. Oh yes, I am.

In the evening I had another senior moment. I selected potatoes for baking, pricked the skins, put them in the oven and went to watch TV with Julia. If only I’d switched the oven on…

The news says it’s going to freeze overnight, so it’s fortunate that there isn’t much snow left. That and the two kilos of salt I put down outside the house should prevent too many problems.
