A Quick 250 Words

I just woke up in front of TV and fell asleep again. Half an hour later I woke up when Julia called to see where I was. Instead of going to bed I had to go and make sandwiches. It’s not a big job in general, but in the early hours, when you want to go to bed, it’s a dreadful job.

Of course, I( then woke up and decided I ought to blog. Bad idea, but that’s what happens after you wake yourself up by making sandwiches at 2am.

Being virtuous, I didn’t make any for myself. I will come home at 1am because it’s my new half day, and I will eat the fried rice I made for tea. I made too much. Under my new weight loss regime I no longer stuff myself by eating half of all I cook, I use self-discipline to eat a proper portion and keep the rest for later.

It was good fried rice, which used several ingredients from the back of the freezer, including a block of prawns with severe freezer burn and a ball of ice and peas. We really should pay more attention to food storage.

I also solved a mystery when I discovered where Julia stores ingredients she doesn’t like. I have ordered more red lentils this week because I thought we had none, but tonight I found them, with the pearl barley, wedged behind the bread maker. She says she was just storing them, but I say it’s strange how everything there seems to be something she doesn’t like me using.

Seven Reasons to be Cheerful

I am feeling particularly cheerful today and decided it called for another list. It won’t run to 10 points, but I’ll try to keep it going as long as possible.

One, I have a wife. She’s still with me after 30 years. I don’t know how, or why, she puts up with me.

Two, I have a sister who worries about my health and sends me face masks by post.

Three, the kids have grown up and become reasonable human beings. I actually quite like them, which wasn’t always the case when they were teenagers. You have to love them, because it’s what parents do. And you have to feed them because that’s the law. But liking them is a bonus.

Four, Number Two Son, currently still in Canada, rang Julia today to say he’d seen a Cardinal and it was the best bird he’d ever seen. Nice to know he has grown up with a proper set of values.

Five, we have enough food. This wasn’t the case a few months ago, when panic-buying was in full swing. I thought of this because I used the last of the pre-cooked rice I’d bought in case things got worse.

Six, after the Mexican style fried rice I made (which was better than it sounds) we had apple crumble using apples from the Mencap garden.

Seven, we had ice cream with the crumble, which was delicious after a hot, stuffy day.

I could get to eight, but seven seem OK, and scans better in the title, so I’m going to call it a day.

The photos are from an old camera card I rediscovered recently.

Nasi Goreng

One of the spice mixes we got last week was for nasi goreng. It’s Indonesian fried rice for those of you who aren’t fluent in Indonesian. I covered that last week, and also mentioned I first wanted to eat it after reading about it in my dad’s Somerset Maugham books.

As I write that I realise it was rijsttafel I’m thinking about, which is similar, but not nasi goreng. Sometimes I worry about my memory. Other times, of course, I just forget.

There are many recipes on the internet and I’ll definitely be making it again once I’ve been shopping. There is a quick and simple vegetarian version I’m keen to try next. In this version the egg is kept as a fried egg. In the version we had earlier it is stirred into the rice and meat mix.

You can buy the various spices from TESCO or other online retailers. They do a spice kit similar to the one we used tonight, and nasi goreng paste, They have also had ketjap manis, but there is none in stock at the moment. You can make your own with soy sauce and sugar.

The rice is a bit dark because I’m working my way through our stock of microwave rice (bought to tide us over when there were shortages) and this contains lentils and quinoa.

Once we have depleted the stocks I will buy some more in preparation for Brexit, which is back on the news again.
