A Hard Week for Me, a Harder Week for Julia

Julia – looking sophisticated in Bakewell

It’s not been a productive week. I’m finding it surprisingly hard to concentrate while Julia is recovering. It’s not a quick or easy process. Each morning I have to check the wound in her neck. It’s sore and swollen and tends to weep a bit, so it’s always difficult to tell if there’s a problem. On Tuesday shr had to go back to hospital and have it looked at.

The fresh bleeding that had started overnight was judged to be harmless after they had cleaned her up and prodded her about. She emerged from hospital after six hours, with clean dressings, another course of antibiotics and the promise of seeing a specialist to do more checking on the wound. It clearly isn’t healing. She is in pain, can’t sleep and is very tired all the time. She is also worried. So am I. It would be a lot easier if it was something I could bind or push or pitch, but it isn’t and all I can do is wait and worry about my inability to help.

I am doing my best to be upbeat, encouraging and to feed her lots of spinach. That’s all I can think of. Fortunately we have a bag of frozen spinach which I bought by accident. I thought it was fresh and would last us a week. It turned out to be frozen and has lasted us a month as I’ve gradually worked it into stews and curries.

We had Cajun inspired rice tonight. Rice is good because people with a three inch gash across their neck don’t enjoy too much chewing. Actually, due to a lack of spices it ended up as Cajun uninspired rice. It had sausages and prawns, peppers, peas, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes with garlic, cumin and chilli. It’ll do. I’ve ordered some Cajun seasoning with the grocery delivery and will see what happens next week.

So good to see these photos of Julia – most of which I remember. Macaroons is a favorite because it is so representative of her fun personality. Sending all of my best wishes to both of you as you navigate this difficult time together.

We are now hoping to be on the road to recovery. 🙂 Of course, ten days ago I didn’t have a care in the world and was just worrying about her . . .

You are doing very well just to be able to keep us updated. It is a wearing situation for you both. I hope that both Julia and you can feel the well wishes hurtling through the ether from your readers.

The good thing is that our medical service is crumbling but not being actively targeted by politicians. Yet. So we will eventually get a cure if one is available. I will definitely keep you posted.

Julia is in my thoughts and prayers, Simon, as are you. I agree, the feeling of helplessness is the worst part of this. I hope the clinic can open up a spot for Julia with a specialist very soon. Hopefully someone called you today about that.

You might want to check the seasonings you are using on her food. Some of them may well have anti-coagulant/antiplatelet effects. Turmeric is one that came to mind right away. See Table 1 in the article below for a more comprehensive list.

Turmeric was originally something I took for my arthritis. It seemed to work. However, I have now been told to avoid it. I will read this link when I have finished replying and see if I need to alter anything. Thank you.

It is true. It’s something I can’t do anything about except make tea and cook spinach. It isn’t a lot of help. However, I will keep doing it until something improves. 🙂
