Well, I did put a post in drafts for today, but I rather think that events of the day have superseded that. It’s been a record-breaking time for British Politics. First Kwasi Kwarteng resigned. He was pretty poor as Chancellors go, though I’m not sure he was the worst. He wasn’t even the shortest serving as Ian McLeod died after just thirty days in office – Kwarteng managed to cling on for 38. Then we had Suella Braverman. I hadn’t even heard of her until the last leadership election. As a result of what I imagine was a deal of some sort, she became Home Secretary. She just left, as I remarked yesterday. Unlike Kwarteng, who couldn’t manage the economy and couldn’t manage top set a new record, Braverman did set a record by becoming the shortest serving modern Home Secretary.
And now Truss . . .
Despite serious opposition from George Canning, who died in office after 119 days. It was a difficult record to break, particularly for a healthy person, but she has done it in some style, shattering Canning’s record by a good margin. It will take a PM of stunning incompetence or really bad health to break that one. Even the Master of Mendacity (or Prince of Porky Pies if you prefer rhyming slang) Boris the Bumbling Blonde Buffoon managed 3 years and 44 days.
Of course, Boris might yet bounce back. Stranger things have happened. It’s just so embarrassing that our Politicians are so bad we even make the septics look good. That’s rhyming slang again. Here, I’ll show you.

I cannot believe how quickly things have changed this week. People will write books on epic ineptitude based on the last 40 days. 🙂
I think that like C*******s, any mention of B***s should be banned. Mid December will be early enough for the former and never will not be too late for the latter.
I think all members of the Curmudgeon Club will agree with the former, and almost everyone will agree with the latter. I couldn’t believe that between news of the resignation and me switching the computer on after tea, he had announced he would stand again. My one fear is that after forty days of Truss he looks competent, loyal to his colleagues and just the sort of man to guide us through the troubled times he created . . .
I also note he is on holiday in the Caribbean. Who paid?
That is a pertinent question.
If only I’d known about the careers potential of politics – I made the mistake of thinking I would need to be hard-working and competent, but find that although that is desirable, it isn’t actually necessary. Ah well . . .
But you have to be very good at sucking up to people you don’t like much.
I’ve spent a lot of time dealing with customers in several of my jobs – casting false pearls before real swine, as they say. 🙂
I was sorry to hear this news. Such instability! I know nothing of her politics, so maybe you are better off. But I do long for the days when politicians at least behaved in predictable ways.
We are better off without her – she was a monster. Brought back fracking and had lots of other good, sensible policies in her sights.
Just saw that Truss has resigned. Holy cats! Our November elections are coming up, and I bet we will join in the political “fun.”
I hope you have a very boing election season. 🙂 One set of excitement will do for both of us. Time for some steady politics.

It will not be boring over here. It’s going to be a “nail biter”.
I hope it gives a good result. I sometimes look at the history of fighting for the vote, look at the way we use it, and wonder if it was worth the struggle.

As Lavinia has noted, it’s going to be a nail-biter, and I am not at all optimistic about the results. I am hoping at least for some glimmers of light to relieve the gloom, especially in Maine. But even that is uncertain.

Look on the bright side – there will still be birdsong and autumn leaves. Not even politicians have worked out a way to spoil that.
