Considerably Bigger Buns

After a holiday season of dreadful  TV I’m happy to report that last night’s viewing was Calendar Girls. It was the second time I’ve seen it and I enjoyed it immensely. It’s a fantastic cast, great script and heart-warming story.

That set me up for a leisurely day.

I won four games of dominoes in the afternoon. The opposition was mainly provided by a ninety-year-old man who has trouble remembering that I’m his son, but you can only play what’s in front of you. My wife and sister both play to let him win but I think that’s discourteous, Anyway, when we played last week he wiped the floor with me despite my best efforts. He may be gradually forgetting everything he knows, but he’s successfully clinging to his domino skills.

This is the only thing of note that happened today, unless you count getting stuck in a chair.

We had a cup of tea in the newly refurbished reception area of the care home, which was very pleasant. When it was time to leave I found that the chair was clinging on, like an inappropriately affectionate koala. I really must lose weight.

We had salad and gala pie for tea on our return. Julia has just gone to the kitchen for cheese.

All in all, this has been a satisfactory sort of day.

The header picture is self-explanatory if you’ve seen the film, or mystifying if you haven’t. Same goes for the title.

A lovely pair of buns! I have seen the film a couple of times, once in the cinema and once on the telly and enjoyed it both times.

If I can still play dominoes when I am ninety, I probably wouldn’t mind if my son beat me. I would just be happy to have him around to play a game or two with.

I am getting to the stage where I have to look at chairs carefully. Must do more cycling.

We should make an appointment to play dominoes when you are 90. I’m happy to travel if there’s a chance of winning.

Chairs can be tricky. And trousers. My advancing years are gradually filling with malevolent inanimate objects.

I avoid the chair issue by standing all day, in front of the computer or in the kitchen. When I do sit, it is in a giant bed or in the bathroom, and mercifully neither of those clasp me unrelentingly at this point.

When my father was in the Navy in the late 40s and early 50s he was in the writer branch (accounting) and they stood at lecterns all day working in ledgers. I’m not sure I could do it.

For me, a bit here and there added up to doing it all day. The value of actually feeling the start of core muscles again, and reduced back pain, matters a lot to me. Also standing on a stack of carpet squares makes a big difference–hard floors are not good for joints and all.

I loved Calendar Girls. Perhaps I should watch it again. Your story of getting stuck in the chair reminded me of the lawyer who came by several times after my grandfather died to meet with my grandmother. He always sat in the kitchen chair with the arms and my brother and I (who were 7 and 10) would gape and snicker and wonder how he was going to exit the chair. My poor mother was always shushing us. Somehow, in spite of the vividness of the memory, I don’t recall that he ever had trouble exiting the chair. My mother just remembers our rude behavior. Just watch out for small, inflexible armchairs. Happy new year to you and Julia!
