Keeping Count (109 Posts 108 Days)

This is going to be my 109th post of the year and it is day 108. It’s a lot easier now that I’m counting in the titles and don’t have to go back to the first day of the year to do my counting.

It’s depressing that my work rate is actually so low, and also that the year is almost a third of the way through.

I’ve just been reading an interview with an author in the back of a book -it’s a J D Kirk Scottish crime novel, though his real name is Barry Hutchison.  In the interview he claims to have written 200 books, though somewhere else he goes for 140. It’s a lot of books.  This includes a lot for children and some comic books, so the word count may not be very high, though I’m not one to judge. I (vaguely) claim to have had 250 poems published, but I honestly have no idea, having lost control of the counting some time ago. I am going to have to try and get them all together. In terms of word count, some are about a dozen words and I doubt if the longest passes 300, so I’m not in a position to preach.

Actually, I have a terrible feeling that I may be exaggerating. It’s possible that I went to bed thinking “150” and woke next day thinking “250”. Excuse me while I go and count.

Several hours later . . .

My admin, as you know, is poor and I can’t find all my published poems. Even if they were all in one place it would be incomplete as I’m a poor record keeper, and they are in at least five lists, but I am over 250.

In fact, I’d better get on with that. And I’d better get my act together and keep proper records in future.

I knew you’d say that! 🙂 They have to be good ones. But that’s why I’m getting them all together. However, I will really need to write some specifically for he book so I’m still a long way off.

I can imagine the joy of being published. I have never had the confidence to submit anything anywhere. My posting on my blog is as far as I have ever gone.
250 is an amazing number and you should probably float around the room feeling joyous and happy. Maybe not content because that would be to put a fullstop on it all.

First you want publication, then you want more . . .
Currently, I am trying to write better, and am thinking of entering more competitions.
As someone once said in an article I read – make those submissions. They don’t know you, you won’t meet an editor in the street, there will be no awkwardness, so just do it, shrug off the rejection and do it again.

250 seems a pretty good total to me. I’m a bit depressed by you mentioning that a third of the year has almost gone. As I get slower, the days disappear faster, and I get less and less done.

Yes, i cast a shadow over my day for a few hours. Then my sister arrived and I made pasta bake and it all seemed more cheerful. But yes, he time does go so quickly.

We also have the question of quality vs. quantity. I suppose that somewhere in this wide world there is a writing genius who can produce 200 books of excellent quality, but it must be rare.

It started out with me being disorganised, which led to me becoming overwhelmed then going into a trance at the thought of sorting it. One day people will research this and compare me to a rabbit in the headlights . . .
You could write about it and become a famous for your insight into the artistic mind. And if I keep writing about i I can avoid trying to sort it out because I am both frightened and bored in equal measure . . .
No? Oh well, back to work then. 🙁
