I love that word “relationship”. Covers all manner of sins, doesn’t it? I fear that this has become a bad relationship. A relationship based on the President taking exactly what he wants and casually ignoring all those things that really matter . . . And a friend who bullies us is no longer a friend. And since bullies only respond to strength, from now onward, I will be prepared to be much stronger. And the President should be prepared for that.
Recognise it? It could be a speech from Sir Keir Starmer in response to things that have recently been said about the UK. In an ideal world it would be, but it’s actually a quote from a speech by Prime Minister Hugh Grant in Love Actually. I think we should all start quoting it in the UK, as a reminder that there are a lot of good things about the UK. We should also quote it as a reminder that the “special relationship” has generally consisted of the USA saying Jump! and the UK asking “How high, sir?”
It’s tempting to get all political again, and start talking history, but there’s no point in arguing. It’s simple. We elect Hugh Grant as PM and we set to work alongside people with a healthier attitude to partnership.
For anyone who wants to look at some facts I suggest this link. For anyone who wants to see the war in Afghanistan in terms of people rather than statistics, I suggest this site. It’s a hard site to read because it contains details of people who should have been able to do things we take for granted like watching our children grow up or blogging about how bad our knees are.
Meanwhile, if you want details about people avoiding fighting in a war I suggest you contact the White House Press Office.
Finally, just to lift the mood a little – try this.

So very well said
🙂
The thing is that when we think about what should be said to Trump, we don’t have the chairmen of big exporting companies, oil company executives, special advisers, arms salesmen and many more ringing us up, texting us, briefing newspaper hacks off the record and saying, “For god’s sake don’t upset him or you will ruin us all and thousands of jobs will be lost.” As David Cameron and Boris Johnson found out, being PM is harder than it looks when real life intrudes on the fantasy.
If I was PM I doubt the CEOs would be talking to me anyway once I started my restructuring of the water industry and similar things.
On the contrary, they would be talking to you every minute of the day.
🙂
And you’re supposed to be thankful for David Beckham right and left feet…but if youve seen the gossip presently coming out of team Beckham….
I try to zone it out, though my view of he Beckhams was formed years ago after this news. http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/uk/newsid_2145000/2145119.stm
I’m sure they aren’t faultless. Parents can be a real pain, but they are always parents.
The new story has taken up.way too much of my news feed
Certainly has. I’m waiting to see what happens with the Windsors now. Prince Harry, veteran of two tours of Afghanistan, including one as a gunship pilot, has just faced off with Trump. As a non-citizen who lied about his drug history on his residence application will we see ICE at his door, possibly the kids taken away? 🙂
That could be a great story ….
You can do that, I’m still working on Churchill’s Social media. 🙂
As you should be ..
🙂
Hugh Grant, the best Prime Minister we never had.
hat is the true measure of greatness – never having to show your feet of clay.
Blooming daffodils always warm the heart. Spring is not too far off now, the days go by so fast! We are west of the current polar vortex, but still have been experiencing weird weather oscillations and subfreezing mornings. Plant and animal life seems very confused. We are way below normal in winter precipitation.
Following Derrick’s posts on Miss Mitford, I have been looking up early 19th Century weather – it was quite variable, though I do believe volcanoes caused some of it. Times change but the weather, it seems, remains variable. 🙂

I will have a look.
That looks like an interesting site and I have bookmarked it.
