Am I the Only One?

WP seems to be running very slowly, added to which I am not getting my normal pages when I try to write. Am I the only one or has WP decided to give me more unwanted “improvements”?  I really hope ntm as i’m not in the mood for more messing about.

There were more people out on the roads yesterday, and more people walking around in the evenings, so it looks like the easing of lockdown restrictions is having some impact. I’m not sure what the easing is, to be honest, aas I no longer bother to keep up.

I just checked – we are still supposed to minimise travel and work from home if we can. Not sure why there is more traffic about, in that case.

People can met outside, including private gardens – two households or groups of six, though it doesn’t say if you can repeat this every hour or whether you are limited to just the same other  household for the next few weeks. The stay at home rule is ended, though w are still asked to minimise travel and no holidays are allowed.

Outdoor sports can start again, though that’s a bit vague.

You can get married, with up to six people attending. Not sure if that includes bride and groom.

Other countries within the UK have different systems, so if you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland the timings will be slightly different. They do this to justify the huge costs of their devolved governments and to show they are different from England, rather than because it makes any difference.

I am fairly sure that life in the Midlands is different from life in London, and we could  justify having our own government. The West Midlands has a population of 5.9 million, which would make it 114 on the world list, above Singapore and Denmark, for instance. The East Midlands is slightly smaller, at 4.8 million, which puts it around 125 on the world list – slightly below Ireland and level with New Zealand.

Compare to Scotland (5.4 million, Wales 3.1 million and Northern Ireland at 1.9 million, and the Republic of the East Midlands starts to look like a viable proposition. We have access to the sea, an airport and a world class cheese industry, what more do we need?

WP seems to run slowly on some blogs I visit, but not others. Tootlepedal’s photos load fast and efficiently, Derrick take some time and coaxing to load. Might be theme related.

I spent an hour or so on a chat with a WP rep and didn’t get what I was hoping for. They opened a support ticket and then I got an email that told me how to fix it. It worked… I will write a post about it. I like the old Classic Editor and the new block editor or even the new classic editor is very complicated. At 60, I don’t like making changes after blogging for 12 years… Doing what I was told is supposed to be a permanent fix… I don’t know how long pertinent is, though…

Some sort of self government for the regions of England would be a welcome development in the battle against the ever increasing centralism and authoritarianism of the current (and past) UK government. It would need to come with a change to the first past the post voting system so it won’t happen as no party elected by FPTP will want to alter that. The Lib Dems made a hash of the referendum on AV when they were in the grip of the Tories.
We have an AV system in Scotland but thanks to the incompetence of the Unionist parties (who are ironically totally obsessed with independence and have no policies to offer the voter), it isn’t working properly.

I’m not sure there is any hope for a sensible restructuring without major change from first principles.

My first two principles for my New New England (someone has already established a New England brand, so we would need the two News, would be to shake off the Celtic Yoke (as I am going to start terming those pesky small countries which are always hanging round yawping about unfairness) and to design a new flag. It would be hard to start a new country and keep a straight face with a series of TV adverts (in the Alba style) which feature a flag which has become a symbol of racism and second rate football hooliganism.
I’m thinking of something in black, white and red, so we can keep the racism (which seems to be quite a popular policy) and ditch the football. Lots of speeches about sunlit uplands, resurrect a reverse danegeld policy and I think I see the future approaching…

There’s something rotten in the state of Denmark could, in population terms, easily become there’s something rotten in the Republic of the East Midlands…

To be fair, it wouldn’t necessarily improve the play.

Strangely enough, I keep getting messages saying that my drafts are using so much energy that they will affect the operating of my computer, yet all runs smoothly.

I haven’t had that. To be fair, I’m not likely to, as my drafts are a few hundred words and (mainly) a recycled photo. Yours are saga length with a full array of illustrations (the Norse Saga, not the holidays for people of a certain age Saga). As if… 🙂

I’m happy that we are getting a little bit back to normal, though I don’t think most realize yet how the past year will effect our present and future. I don’t think they fully compare what “the new normal” means

Yes. That’s why I like you. I got into a quasi argument/debate with someone on my blog today. They said they have absolutely no problem with the info tracking that Google engages in. I’m having a hard time keeping a straight face as I responded.
