Chaos, Confusion and Corona Virus

Well, I’m healthy again today. I’m not sure what I had, but an early night and a mug of hot Lemsip seems to have sorted it all out.

In the middle of the corona virus, schools are closing, we have our first confirmed case in the East Midlands and my surgery has texted to tell me that if I’ve been to an area of concern, or in touch with anyone who has been there, and if I have any symptoms, I should stay away from the surgery and ring the NHS Helpline.

Stock markets are falling, gold is rising and the world economy is in disarray.

And I’m confused what all the fuss is about. It’s not exactly deadly, as most people seem to recover. It’s not necessarily going to be the biggest killer of the year either. So far there have been 2,800 deaths. Set this against an estimated 290,000 who die of flu in an average year, or the 140,000 who died from measles in 2018, and I’m not entirely sure I need to worry.

The problem is that bad news sells papers, and people love to worry.

I’m far more worried by an article on the news regarding robots making sandwiches. They are taking over…

We also have maintenance work starting on Trent Bridge, just to add to the congestion caused by the work on Clifton Bridge. (You don’t need to know much about Nottingham, just think of any town with two main bridges – both with roadworks on them. It’s not good news.)

Those bridge works are in addition to the local road closure while they renew gas mains.

That wasn’t what I meant to write about, but when I started off this morning I didn’t know I was going to get a text from the doctor telling me to stay away.

It’s not as if we need the extra difficulties that the weekend is forecast to bring – more rain to areas that are already flooded and a selection of high winds. I’m starting to think of the opening scenes of Flash Gordon, where the Emperor Ming pelts Earth with hail and boiling rain.

Picture of the day is a shot of ducks in Derbyshire from a few weeks ago.

There is such a lot of fuss about Covid-19 (as my sister insists on calling it. She is one of the top brass at Kent Ambulances and spends all her waking hours testing people for the virus.) but I would hate it if my elderly mother caught it and as I have asthma and inject myself every week with a potion that lowers my immune system, I’m not too keen on getting it myself, either. I am glad you’re feeling better; probably a 48-hour virus of sorts. There’s a lot of it about πŸ™

I don’t mind people being concerned about it and taking precautions, I just don’t see why the world needs to stop for it when flu and measles are bigger killers and are always with us.

Well, just so. Many of these deaths could be prevented by people taking advantage of the injections available to them. We had nearly got rid of measles and then some form of selfish madness overtook people who should have known better.

Well, here’s an uncheerful American to cheer you up. Between our politics and the Coronavirus I feel completely worn down, exhausted. It doesn’t help that we have a couple of jackasses in charge—Trump and Pence. I don’t know how they even manage to walk across the street by themselves. Anyway…not feeling at all cheerful today. πŸ™

Sorry to hear that Laurie. Would it help if I sent Boris Johnson across. He was born in the USA so he qualifies to be President…

It would make me feel better.

Look at my blog and think of the hummingbirds. It might help, as they always cheer me up when I see them on your blog.

No, you may keep Boris all for yourself. πŸ˜‰ I did not know he was born in the United States. And there, with the talk of hummingbirds, you made me smile!

Good to hear it. Yes, it’s always been one of my secret fantasies that Boris becomes President of the USA and leaves us alone, but I suppose it will never happen now.

Yikes! And double Yikes! You know, of course, that having Trump is enough of burden for us without adding Boris to the mix. Does he have duel citizenship, I wonder? Could he actually run for president? Holy cats, what a thought!

πŸ™‚ The worst bit is that I look at people in the street and think “Did you vote for Brexit?” or “Did you vote for Boris?”. I was hoping to become more relaxed and tolerant as I got older but life is turning me crabby.

I have often compared our blunderbuss with yours in my mind. I feel like the glorious Obama years made a bunch of bigoted people angry and that’s what got Trump elected. But then I see you have a similar situation. So it must be more than that. I do spend too much time wandering the grocery stores and other public places thinking “Who ARE you people???”

Since it began I have been wanting a fun little play on the “Corona” virus – something about it being better with a lime wedge. But Julia nabbed it. Perfect.

I am thinking there could be advantages to quarantine, I have a large pile of books, will stock up on some canned supplies and wait until I start sneezing, I could use the rest. It is very hard to be too concerned when it appears to be just a bit of a cold if you are lucky.

I was talking to a chap about the new virus and he laughed off, saying it wasn’t important as it only affects old people with underlying conditions. As a 78 year old with COPD I didn’t laugh quite as heartily as he did.

I will have a look tonight, though I admit the middle-aged grumpy Englishman at my core is already thinking “Americans! Ha! Too bloody cheerful by half!”
You’ve already made me exceed my daily exclamation limit. πŸ™‚

Is that our thing? That we’re cheerful? I didn’t know. I know it’s MY thing – people say I am cheerful – you guys would REALLY hate ME!
