We had coffee with blueberry muffins in the Mencap garden this morning as part of my programme of guerrilla snacking. This came as a surprise, as until I needed a word to describe my random intake of sugary calories I didn’t know I had a programme of guerrilla snacking. The coffee came out of a flask and the muffins came from McDonalds. Consequently, I have to admit that quality wasn’t necessarily the keynote of the morning. However, real life can’t be all cappuccino and croissants. Or scones.
I’m calling it Number 8 in the series, just to add some light and shade to the Scone Chronicles. Location was good, company was excellent but muffins just aren’t scones.
The flowers are doing well, though they could do with more of them. Unfortunately money is so tight that there isn’t any for fripperies like flowers. They are saving for a new cover on the second polytunnel. I’ve just ordered 100 snowdrops. I’m going to plant some at home and give Julia the rest. She’s a lucky woman – blueberry muffins and snowdrops all in one day.
I just mentioned this to her. She raised an eyebrow and muttered something I didn’t quite catch.
Her tolerance and my deafness are two important factors in the longevity of our marriage.
I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Great Tit at Wilford
The birds, as usual, were not very cooperative, but I did get one shot.
All right. I will jump into the fray. Much as I love muffins, the time has come to learn how to make scones. Stay tuned…
I await the outcome with interest…
Maybe as soon as this Friday. What do you think about round scones? Are they acceptable?
Round scones are fine. Flour the cutter well and don’t twist it. Sultanas are the best thing for fruit scones. 🙂

Forgot to say – good luck!
I was put off muffins by those dry apologies sold at Burger King on King Cross station. Only recently have I learned that they can be quite moist. Good photographs of the garden
Thanks Derrick, it was good to get round the garden. We never seem to get on top of our own garden these days.
As for muffins, you are right that the ones we buy aren’t the best advert. 🙂
I have to say, my muffins are rather tasty. 😉
I’m sure they are. 🙂
I’ll bet
🙂
Those are lovely photos from the Mencap garden. Our white primrose is finally showing a flower bud now.
Good to hear. Primroses are a lovely flower.
I prefer a scone to a muffin any day! I have a number of perennials after dividing up some plants and wish I lived nearer to you so I could donate them to the Mencap garden.
Thank you, that’s a kind thought.
I’m not going to be drawn into the scone/muffin debate. 🙂
🙂
I like muffins. I like scones. The best thing I can come up with is…a muffin is a cupcake with no frosting…sometimes very sad and disappointing. Carry on!
🙂
Those little irises are wonderful. And what in the world are those long blossoms or catkins? I too was taken by the lichen.
I think the catkins are just on a willow. I’ll have a look next week. The irises were a surprise. 🙂
I always like a bit of lichen but the other pictures spoke very clearly too.
Thank you – I aspire to have the photographic skills of a Tootlepedal.
I guess I am too American; that blueberry muffin looks WAY closer to something I might eat than your scones do. Your photos are lovely. I am getting so tired of winter and it’s good to see that someone has some blooms.
We’ve been lucky with the weather this winter – just keeping my fingers crossed it continues.
As for the scone/muffin question – you have my sympathy. I cannot imagine a life bereft of scones…
Lichen is a good sign.
So I’ve been told – I was pleased to see it.
I think I might have some on one of my apple trees but then it could be moss.
But it could be lichen… 🙂
Indeed. I will investigate further
Can you get a picture? We could all have a look.
I’ll do that tomorrow as the light is fading now but help with identification would be great 😊
I’ll ask Tootlepedal to have a look after you post – he’s a lichen afficianado.
Ah ha! Sounds good – thank you, Simon.
I had to look that up – I didn’t know it. Thank you.
🙂
