I need to brush up on my food presentation technique and buy plain plates, but I think the photograph gives the general idea. It’s fish pie with peas, sweetcorn, onions, mushrooms and dill in the sauce. It’s topped with sweet potato and served with carrots, asparagus and a cabbage and broccoli mix. They aren’t all full portions but I imagine there are six portions lurking in there.
Yes, I feel guilty about the out of season South American asparagus but nobody is perfect.
At one time I would have sat back with a snug expression on my face, having done a day’s veg in one meal. Since recent changes to government advice it’s now only 60% of my day’s intake. Even with thick cut marmalade for breakfast, a pickled onion with my lunch and two bits of fruit I’m falling short of the new target.
Looks like I’m going to have to rethink breakfast and eat vegetable soup for lunch. Or salad. For the rest of my life.
That’s the paradox. The healthier my diet (which is something achieved by eating food I don’t enjoy) the longer I will live. And the longer I live, the more salad I’m going to have to eat.
Not living for ages or eating salads? It’s in the balance.
At the moment I,m trying to work out the minimum amount of salad I will need to reach 90. If I get to 89 panic eating of greens may well set in, but we will have to see.
Wow! That is some plate of food.An excellent reminder that healthy food can be beautiful, and judging by the looks, very tasty.
It was tasty. I always like making this one – not really keen on fish but love the way the sweet corn and peas look in the mix.
It looked absolutely delicious! Again, healthy food doesn’t have to be blah.
I’m sure I can adapt. 🙂
You won’t live any longer. It will just seem longer!
Yes, that’s my fear…
The pie looks excellent. Some forgotten Cabinet Minister responsible for the alcohol limits said about 30 years afterwards that they couldn’t agree so they made up the numbers. I’m sure that’s how it is with fruit and veg.
Yes, they did a similar thing with the development of modern free range laying systems. To be fair, without the guidelines I’d probably just eat baked beans and onion rings, so it is doing me some good.
I’m afraid that on most days we fall far short of the required 10 a day.
In truth I’m actually hoping that by aiming for 10 a day I will manage to average five.
That will probably work! We try to have as many as we can each day but some days it isn’t possible to have more than two!
Yes, we only managed three portions one day last week – pear, banana and mushy peas.
The plate looks good! With time you may learn to enjoy your new eating patterns. I sometimes think about our cats. I can hear them thinking “What’s that in my bowl? Cat food, again???”
Cat food or salad? Not a straightforward choice. However, a week full of veg and I admit I felt years younger. I’m sure it will get easier…
