I just clicked to use the new editor. In trying to get back to the old one I found that they are going to force me to use the new editor from 1st June whether I want to or not. In addition to that I have had to read a load of condescending drivel about the ease and power of the new system. This comes complete with “blocks”, which I don’t understand and have never needed, but seems to come without the buttons that will allow me to add photos and links.
I should have known something was going on because I’d been suffering minor glitches for a week or two and it’s usually a sign that some jiggery-pokery is in progress.
It took me 45 minutes, and many false starts, to get back to the classic editor and despite looking, I am still none the wiser about how to post photos or add links using the new editor. I would have thought that a new and improved editor would have made this easier, not harder. I also can’t find the word count on the new one.
As usual, the words new and improved are used as if they are interchangeable when in fact new is not the same thing as improved at all.
All in all, if we have to have a new editor, why can’t we have one with a decent set of instructions sent to us before the thing is rolled out. I know these things happen, because that’s what happens with websites – people keep tinkering with them and other people keep telling you about the new and improved version and how “people” have been asking for changes and giving positive feedback. It’s always “people” rather than actual names.
To be honest, I come on here to practice writing, to put my thoughts and frustrations out of my head, to look into the loves of other people and to have a general chat. I don’t need anything glitzy and high tech.
What I really need is the digital equivalent of a box of old-fashioned printer paper (remember the stuff with circular holes down the sides and perforations at the end of every sheet?) that I can write on continuously and add links and photos.
That is pretty much what I had until a few hours ago and I was happy. Now I can’t add links and photos.

I don’t know how I ended up using the new editor – if it just appeared one day on the mobile app or if I accidentally selected it. Anyway, I don’t know what blocks looks like on the desktop version through a browser, so can’t advise on how to insert links and photos.
I don’t mind blocks – I’m slowly finding my way with it, although I have still no idea where the word count is.
I signed up for thenew editor last year or longer ago then after a couple of tries pressed the button to revert. Did the same this time, used it once, tried to get back – it took ages. I have a glimmer of hope they may let me continue with it. 🙂

Love the flowers and the wood animal photo. I’m just curious about all of it. I’m still using classic, though I tested out the new editor to release soon and am still conflicted about switching over. It has improved since the initial rollout but I’m not 100% and will be so disappointed if I can’t go back. Yes, tearing those perforated edges off was so satisfying!
I’d forgotten all about perforated computer paper until we had a good clearout. It was more archaeology than housework! 🙂

I liked the old editor which was there ten years ago when I started, but by the time I had used its successor for some time, the old editor looked very clunky and old fashioned. Maybe, with time and patience, our use of the new editor will soon be quite smooth and we will look back on the current editor which we are loath to leave with some condescension. Fingers crossed anyway.
Yes, it is likely that in five years we will be moaning about the next new editor and singing the praises of the old new editor. 🙂
So far I have not had to use the new editor. I will be posting again at the end of June, so we will see what your experiences have been by then.

I’d been seeing prompts to use the new editor for most of the 18 months or so that they’ve been trialling it. My husband set up (well, re-jigged) a blog for his allotment site, and it defaults to the new editor. Since hubby doesn’t really try to keep up with tech, every time he wants to post something, I go in, fiddle around, undo what I’ve done and then talk him through it. If we do a few things on the trot, he can usually manage on his own after a little while.
In the process, I discovered that I could make it look like the classic editor, and do all the things I wanted to do, including uploading photos etc. And today, I saw the dreaded article saying they’re shutting down the classic editor. But towards the bottom of that post, it says you REALLY CAN choose to continue using the classic editor. One way too do this is to select ‘classic block’. That might be enough for you.
Alternatively, you can find that post from WP, go directly to the end, then scroll up until you reach the bit about how to use the actual classic editor. (I don’t remember that much detail from a single reading!)

I think I have managed to get back to the proper classic editor.
I resent the change because I simply don’t need it and am getting too old for change for change’s sake.
The problem is that as we get older the designers get younger. The printer paper you describe must have been before my time 🙂
You are lucky. Poor quality paper, sprocket feed and a dot matrix printer… A recipe for misery. 🙂
