Whilst shopping this afternoon I had a flick through the cookery magazines.
That’s two challenges in one. The first is to stop buying magazines. They are expensive and never as useful as you think they are going to be. I’ll only be buying magazines this year if they have enough free seeds with them to justify the price.
To reinforce the message I’m going to remind myself that it takes me half an hour to earn the money to buy an average magazine.
Second challenge is to find some new recipes.
It’s easy to get bogged down with the same old things. Traybake, pasta bake, vegetable curry, fish pie, cottage pie, stew, hash…
I could do with some new ideas.
Fortunately, I don’t need to get ideas from magazines as there are loads of new ideas on the internet. I will have to see what I can find. I also have a big stack of cookery books. They have all come from charity shops and the food looks lovely.
Time too, I think, to get the slow cooker out again.

When I had a smart meter fitted, it showed that slow cookers are actually as expensive as an oven, if not more so, to run. So, for convenience or the needs of specific dish, using one is one thing but if I had a working oven I would use that instead!
Yes, something to think about. We are loking at refitting the kitchen this year, so a new oven would improve things – only have the small oven working at the moment!

Slow cookers are the best..okay, one of the best (I love my wok, steamer and cast iron pans) cooking utensils!

I second the suggestion about getting out the slow cooker. It makes humdrum food taste interesting.
I used to use one quite a bit but I left it standing on top of the cooker and Julia switched the wrong ring on…
It appears that this was my fault.
I bought another but haven’t quite felt the urge to use it.
Have you tried sausage casserole?
I’ve traybaked them but not sure if we’ve ever casseroled them – always a first time!
Casseroles sausages tend to be soggier.

OK – though they might not be very inspiring. We just had potato and root veg and leek corned beef hash. Leftovers with corned beef in other words. 🙂
