It wasn’t the most interesting of days.
Rain, repetitiveness and a limited supply of customers all conspired to make it a bland sort of day.
We have some new stock, but they are mainly modern coins, and I think you know my view on this sort of thing. I just had a look at the Royal Mint website, to post a link and this is what I found. A thousand years of minting history, which has brought us some of the most beautiful coins in the world (though this is, of course, a matter of taste) is now bringing us the Game of Thrones series.
If the decay of the modern world was on trial, and I was prosecuting, I would now rest my case.
I applaud the fact that people are now searching through their change looking for coins to collect, and it’s even better that they are coming into the shop to fill gaps in their collections. But look at what they are being offered.
There are other organisations that produce coins, and put marketing ahead of value and aesthetics, but they aren’t grinding a thousand years of history under the heel of commercialism. That, and the fear of legal action, means that I will just mention the Royal Mint.
I don’t even mind about the commercialism, it’s the poor standards of design and trivial nature of many of the subjects that really get to me. As a result, I can’t even get a decent picture to illustrate the post, so please accept my apologies for the poor quality photos.
The case for the defence – will you accept the Olympic Games fifty pence pieces? A friend and colleague of mine collected the lot and had me looking out for them which, I have to confess, I rather enjoyed. Game of Thrones coins does seem a really strange choice however. What next Star Trek? On the Busses? Coronation Street?
The Royal Mint already does Star Wars – just checked and they, and the GoT are described as “medals”.
I’ll accept anything if it gets people collecting, but I’d like to see better designs and production standards.
Perhaps it is set in Newcastle.
Ha! I had a year in Middlesbrough once. Soon after arriving (in October) I walked into town wearing a shirt and jacket and people in vests kept looking at me like I was a freak.
Someone turned up at our choir last week wearing shorts.
Yes, I’ve noticed a lot of shorts being worn over the last few years, often accompanied by the sort of legs that would look better covered.
Oh well, it’s those same folk who keep making new discoveries in health matters that revoke what they said before…job security. Yeesh!
Yes, it seems to be a circular sort of thing with health – always something “new”.
As for the A-Z OOdear; and isn’t Game of Thrones American?
Yes, though it seems to have a lot of British actors. Must be a lot of call for villains. 🙂
Yeesh. I have not watched Game of Thrones as it seemed really unpleasant. Now a coin series, eh? Ah well, I suppose the powers that be figured they’d be popular!
Yes, they must have confidence in it as I presume both the licensing and the production costs are high. I’ve never watched it either, though I have seen a few clips and noticed that a number of women characters seem ludicrously under-dressed when you consider the weather they seem to have. 🙂
