Loose Ends

The header picture shows the bag of oats Julia bought from Heckington. They are produced at the Maud Foster Mill in Boston (yes, American readers, we have one too). She is determined that I am going to benefit from slow-release carbs and extra roughage in the coming year.

You’d have thought they would have stocked oats from their own mill, but it seems not.

I’m thinking of doing a series of posts on mills as there are plenty in Lincolnshire, and the surrounding counties, with many of them having tearooms attached. I’m trying to work a joke into posts/mills, or post mills but it’s not quite working yet. I’ll work on it as I think the world of mill blogs needs a joke or two.

Today’s work consisted mainly of washing windows and serving customers. This is a picture of the new shop, illuminated by sunlight streaming in through the newly cleaned windows. Once the building work is finished they are going to allow me to clean all the glass in counters and cabinets. As you can see, there will be a lot of work.

After work, we had roasted vegetables with belly pork and kale. It marks the start of my new healthy eating campaign. Well, healthyish. It’s a start.

I was talking to a Miller in Tasmania 18mths ago. I think the answer is that in order to be able to guarantee the quality of a milled product they must do a major clean up after each product. So maybe one mill will do a product for a number of colleagues and another mill will do your product for you. Does that make sense?

Would be good to read your planned series on mills in Lincolnshire. I’m embarking on a search for outlets which sell my favourite organic bread flour. Could throw up some interesting days out!

I enjoyed it. Tonight’s casserole, with three sorts of root vegetable and sweet potato (and chopped kale on the side) was equally worthy but less successful.

Tomorrow we will be having a chicken pie with leeks, mushrooms and sweetcorn. I have carrots and broccoli in mind for the side veg.

This year I’m going to concentrate on getting back to ten portions of fruit and veg a day. 🙂

That looks pretty healthy to me. I had kale this evening myself, though sautéed, and some rice with baked salmon. It’s hard to cut carbs, but I do love the whole grains, and wish oatmeal lasted longer when eaten for breakfast…but it’s also lovely in snack bars and granola, so there are lots of options. Ah, food… Well, good luck with all that glass. My own windows need doing, but not in this 17 degree weather (F).

We are trying to eat better here too–some of us need to avoid sugars in my house, and we’re vegetarian, so that can make it a bit harder sometimes to find a balance. Good luck and enjoy yours–
